The Estill model is a research-based approach to understanding and training the human voice.
Developed by Jo Estill (1921–2010), a world-renowned singer, researcher, and educator, the model empowers anyone to understand how their voice works and how to use it in a conscious, healthy way.
Free from cultural or aesthetic bias, the Estill model focuses on vocal health and is suitable for anyone who wants to fully explore the expressive potential of their voice in singing or speech, in any style, and with any vocal quality.
At the heart of Jo Estill’s nearly 25 years of research was one guiding question: “How am I doing that?”
This led to a deep investigation into vocal physiology, acoustics, and voice quality perception. From this work came a set of clear, science-based vocal exercises — Figures for Voice — that help you isolate and control each part of the vocal system. These exercises train you to feel and engage individual structures of the voice, and then combine them freely to produce any vocal quality you choose.
